Benjamin Weinthal: With friends like this…

The Green Party chairwoman, Renate Künast (Picture), told me last year that anti-Semitism is non-existent within the Green Party. It was a bizarre answer at the time because her party had just voted to support a German parliament resolution combating anti-Semitism, which declared that all sectors of German society are not immune from Jew-hatred. As a kind of sign of advancing relations between Israelis (and Diaspora Jews) and Germans, she said she would be prepared to sign a petition from the German-based political group Stop the Bomb, which seeks to end Germany’s economic support for a regime in Teheran that denies the Holocaust and calls for Israeles destruction. As of this blog writing, she has not signed. According to a Stop the Bomb spokesman, Künast has ignored follow-up requests to sign.
