imagination of progressives everywhere.
Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday urged people of Turkish origin living in Germany to take part in German society and not to bring conflicts taking place back in Turkey to Germany.I expect Merkel to deliver a speech confessing that her entire policy has been stupid, destructive and wrong. I just have no expectation of that actually happening. Because unlike Merkel, I live in the real world.
"It is first and foremost about not bringing the conflicts that exist now in Turkey over to Germany," she said in an interview with German broadcaster ARD.
"But rather, those who have been living here for years and perhaps also have German citizenship, take part in the development of our country and if they want to they are very welcome to do so," she said.
Merkel drew criticism for an interview published in Passauer Neue Presse newspaper on Tuesday, in which she said: "We expect those with a Turkish background who have lived in Germany for a long time to develop a high degree of loyalty to our country."
So do the Muslim Turks that have filled Germany. They are under no illusions that they are Germans rather than Turks. Their national and ethnic and religious allegiances are to Turkey, to Turkmen and to Islam.
Likewise the Kurds they are clashing with have their own core allegiances. They are not about to enter Merkel's multicultural fantasy and become secular Germans who occasionally visit a mosque.
That's not how it works for the vast majority. It might be time for Merkel to develop a degree of loyalty to her country. Because the Turkish settlers certainly won't.
