'DELUSIONAL' SNP shamed for hoping Spain will grant Scotland EU status after Gibraltar row

THE SNP is “delusional” to believe Spain will simply let them apply for EU membership following the fall-out between Britain and Madrid over Gibraltar, a leading Liberal Democrat has claimed.Scottish Lib Dem leader Willie Rennie claimed if Nicola Sturgeon’s nationalist party ever won independence from the rest of Britain, the Spanish government would treat Scotland’s application to the EU the same way it is handling Gibraltar over Brexit. Tensions regarding the future of the British overseas territory have risen after it emerged there was an EU proposal to give the Spanish government a veto on any decision regarding Gibraltar when the UK leaves the bloc.Brexit guidelines published by the European Council state a deal between the Brussels bloc and Britain on issues like trade will only be agreed if it is signed off by the Spanish leaders. Rennie said: “The situation with Gibraltar is just a taste of how an independent Scotland would be treated in any future negotiations. “For the SNP to believe that Spain will simply bend over backwards and just waive Scotland into full EU or even Efta membership is delusional.“The Gibraltar situation should be a hard lesson for the SNP that Spain will look after their own interest and that means making sure that nothing aids Catalonia’s bid for independence. “Easy access for an independent Scotland into the EU would clearly be something the Spanish would not want.” Mr Rennie’s remarks come as former Tory leader Lord Howard claimed Theresa May would be prepared to go to war for the Rock – just as Margaret Thatcher once did for the Falkland Islands.Lord Howard said: “Another woman Prime Minister sent a task force halfway across the world to protect another small group of British people against another Spanish-speaking country. "And I'm absolutely clear that our current woman Prime Minister will show the same resolve in relation to Gibraltar as her predecessor did." A former Royal Navy commander has said Britain could “cripple” Spain should the two forces clash. Rear-Admiral Chris Parry said: “We could cripple Spain in the medium term and I think the Americans would probably support us too.”
