Germany vs. the Jews — Again

The bottom line is that Israel can hardly count on Germany as a friend. It’s been behaving recently more like an enemy.
by P. David Hornik

A poll earlier this month caused some consternation when it found “high levels of anti-Semitism in Germany” and, particularly, 47.7 percent of Germans saying that “Israel is conducting a war of extermination against the Palestinians.” One of the researchers called the findings “remarkable” in light of the “widespread Holocaust remembrance and education events in Germany.” These don’t seem to be working. Some German academics, however, explain such findings in terms of “secondary anti-Semitism” — or “that Germans are filled with pathological guilt about the Holocaust and shift the blame to Jews and Israel to assuage their complexes.” One wonders if Germans are really that consumed with guilt, or if it’s just old habits resurfacing. Whatever the case, it would be pleasant to report that, despite popular antipathy to the Jewish state and the Jews, the current conservative government of Angela Merkel is doing much better. But its record, too, at least toward Israel, is fraught with problems. Much of this concerns a Hamburg-based entity called the European-Iranian Trade Bank, or EIH. As Fox News reported last month, the U.S. Treasury Department states that “EIH has acted as a key financial lifeline for Iran as one of Iran’s few remaining access points to the European financial system.” Earlier in February, eleven U.S. senators wrote to the German foreign minister “asking that he stop EIH from doing business with Iran” and expressing concern about EIH’s “continued financial support of Iran’s nuclear proliferation activities.” To no avail. Iran’s geopolitical aggression and nuclear program are recognized by now as a threat to the West and not just to Israel — hence the U.S. effort to coordinate sanctions against Iran. But, considering that Tehran has often boasted of its imminent annihilation of Israel and is sponsoring terrorist activity on its borders, the threat to Israel is most acute — making Germany’s abetting of that threat all the more striking. Indeed, Fox News also reports that Treasury says “EIH facilitated the sale of more than $3 million in materials for Iran’s missile programs.” And it goes beyond EIH, since “Germany is Iran’s biggest European trade partner. German exports to Iran totaled $4.7 billion from January through November of last year. This was a 5 percent increase over the same period in 2009.” Israelis could be forgiven for wondering if, the more things seemingly change, the more they stay the same.

India channels funds to Iran via German Bundesbank

BERLIN – (AFP) India is set to pay Iran for billions of dollars worth of oil imports by channelling funds to Tehran via the German central bank, the business daily Handelsblatt reported Monday. Under pressure from the United States to break direct commercial links with the Islamic republic, India intends to place money for its Iranian oil imports in an account with the Bundesbank, according to Handelsblatt. The Bundesbank would then transfer the money to the European-Iranian Trade Bank AG (EIH), based in the northern German city of Hamburg, the paper said, quoting financial and political sources. “We are in talks with the Bundesbank,” Neeta Bhushan of the Indian Finance Ministry told the paper. The arrangement has been given the green light by two ministries in the German government, the Handelsblatt reported. Two of the EIH’s main shareholders, Bank Mellat and Bank Refah, are subject to European Union sanctions approved last year in addition to UN restrictions, the paper said. Contacted by news agency AFP, the Bundesbank declined to comment while a spokeswoman for the Economy Ministry told a regular government briefing that the EIH, also known as the EIHB, was itself not subject to EU or UN sanctions. “The inclusion of a bank on the [sanctions] list is not something decided by the [German] government but the European Union council,” spokeswoman Sarah Schneid said. “What counts is involvement of a bank in financing Iran’s nuclear and missile programme … The government investigates closely any indications [of such involvement].” Chancellor Angela Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert stressed that the bank was under “strict” supervision, with all transfers over €10,000 ($14,000) needing to be reported and all those above €40,000 requiring approval. Germany has long been under fire for its close business ties with Iran, with the country’s exports there totalling €3.8 billion in 2010, according to official figures. Berlin’s abstention this month over a UN Security Council resolution – it holds a non-permanent seat in the body – authorising military action in Libya has also angered Germany’s partners and put Merkel under pressure at home.

German police forbids Solidarity with Israel

BERLIN – (EJPost) The German police has done it again, they prohibit any solidarity with Israel! At a demonstration on March 27, 2011 before the Berlin central station, where an anti-Israel group had called for a boycott of Israel, the police removed an Israeli flag and took two men into custody, because they refused to refrain from their peaceful expression of solidarity with Israel. During a pro-Arab exhibition, an anti-Israel group “informed” about the Middle East conflict, (The group accused Israel for apartheid and called for a boycott of Israeli products.) two men walked in the exhibition and held up an Israeli flag. That was all they did! They do not interfere, they not yelled, they do not rioting. Neither they chanted anti-Palestinian slogans, nor they presented any signs of anti-Palestinian views. They don’t called for any boycott and set nobody’s existence in question. They only showed peacefully the Israeli flag, to ensure, that Israel is not a devastating devil like the Palestinian Hamas claimed, but a lovely country with good and bad sides. This provoked the pro-Palestinian demonstrators, because the simple existence of the Israeli flag was already a thorn in their eyes. Just as there it is for the Hamas, the mere existence of the State of Israel and Jews is a problem to be solved at all. When the pro-Palestinians got up, to put an end to the existence of the hated Israeli flag in their midst , the police intervened. However, the police did not defend the right of two people, to hold up the Flag of a peaceful democratic country. No – they confiscated the flag of Israel and took the two people in custody.

German Interior Minister Friedrich: Muslims must help catch extremists

German Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich said on Tuesday Muslims should help root out Islamists in their community, announcing a new initiative targeting extremists like the one responsible for a recent deadly attack on US soldiers in Frankfurt. The conservative minister, presenting his plans to Muslim groups at the government's so-called Islam Conference in Berlin, said he planned to promote closer cooperation between security officials and the Muslim community. After the recent murder of two US airmen at the Frankfurt Airport by an allegedly freshly radicalized Islamist, Friedrich said more should be done to understand the hidden world of jihadists. On Tuesday he said the government and Muslims should work together to fight violent extremism. thelocal

Eichmann trial in Israel sparked panic in Adenauer’s government

BERLIN – (EJPost) When Israel in 1961 opened the trial against Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann, the German government under Chancellor Adenauer (90% former Members of the Nazi-Party NSDAP), came into tremble. A. Eichmann How secret documents show: The german Foreign Office was afraid, that during the process could appear incriminating evidence against “officials of the German administration of federal and state”. According to information from the magazine “Der Spiegel”, the German intelligence service should find out, what Eichmann testified in the Israeli interrogations about “public figures of the Federal Republic of Germany.” This is apparent from previously unknown Eichmann files of the German Federal Government, the Federal Intelligence Service (BND) and the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The German intelligence service should find out, what Eichmann testified in the Israeli interrogations about “public figures of the Federal Republic of Germany.” According to the CIA the German Federal Government “was on the brink of hysteria”, because they feared for their reputation in the world. The German Federal Intelligence Service records indicate, that a group of former SS officer and NSDAP-Member, (some of Adenauers gouvernment), had helped Eichmann to escape from Germany. German and American intelligence services knew where Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann was hiding eight years before Israeli agents apprehended him, according to documents released in January 2011. Albanian Government Selling Weapons to Muammar Qaddafi

In January 2010, MEICO a company owned by the Ministry of Defense of Albania engaged in a complex operation of exporting 150,000 82-millimeter mortar shells to Libya. Two Serbian gun smugglers made this export possible. One of them was Slobodan Tesic, who violated the UN weapons embargo to President’s Charles Taylor Liberia; the other was Zoran Damianovic, who in July 2005 spent a short stint in prison in Montenegro for attempted smuggling of a thousand M70 and M72 Zastava assault rifles [note: These are reverse-engineered Kalashnikov variants.] The export of 150,000 82-millimeter mortar shells was made to a Montenegro company Yugoimport of Montenegro, a subsidiary of the Serb weapons company Yugoimport SDPR according to the EUC (end user certificate) and the cargo manifest and the bill lading of the vessel. The payment was made through Niksicka Banka of Montenegro, a bank with old ties to the weapons trade of the MOD of Albania.

Worry Over Islam Like Hitler’s Hatred of Jews? Yes, says Germany's leading historian of anti-Semitism

by Til Biermann and Clemens Heni
Last Tuesday, “Berlin Islam Week” opened its gates with the topic “Islam as Boogey Man.” On the following days subjects like “Eco-Islam” and “Islamic Economy” (i.e., banking houses working without interest, using fees instead) were handled. Muslims and non-Muslims are supposed to meet there, listen to lectures, and discuss. The Berlin Senate appointee for integration, Günter Piening, acted as patron and said: “We have to show that Islam belongs here. Nevertheless I see a kind of self-victimization within a part of the Muslim community.” However, Piening and the Berlin Senate are supporting an event which is openly pleading for more Sharia in Germany by, for example, promoting Islamic banking.
As an introduction there was a so-called “incentive lecture” by Prof. Wolfgang Benz, the chief anti-Semitism researcher of Germany, on the topic “Islam as Boogey Man — Myth or Reality?”

Germany provokes more tensions over Libya

Angela Merkel’s government has gone on the offensive over its maligned Libya policy, pushing hard for a complete oil embargo and even hinting that its NATO allies are hypocrites for bombing the country while still buying its oil.
Development Minister Dirk Niebel told broadcaster ZDF on Thursday night that in effect Britain, France and the US were hypocritical for not supporting a complete embargo on Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi’s oil."It is notable that exactly those countries which are blithely dropping bombs in Libya are still drawing oil from Libya," he said – remarks that are hardly likely to ease tensions with key allies angered over the country's refusal to take part in the military operation.Meanwhile Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle on Friday criticized French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s broad threat to Arab rulers that they faced Libya-style intervention if they violently repressed their own people."Every ruler should understand, and especially every Arab ruler should understand that the reaction of the international community and of Europe will from this moment on each time be the same," Sarkozy said in Brussels on Thursday night, according to online news source EUobserver. "We will be on the side of peaceful protesters who must not be repressed with violence."Westerwelle responded on Friday by telling broadcaster rbb-Inforadio: “I actually see here a very dangerous discussion with very difficult consequences for the region and the Arab world as a whole.”Sarkozy took a leading role in the decision to use military force against Qaddafi but annoyed the German government by apparently not consulting them first.Westerwelle, who abstained from the United Nations Security Council vote last week to enforce a "no-fly zone" in Libya, said military means alone could not solve the Libyan crisis but that political solutions were also needed. “What we need is a political process – this must now be prepared,” he said.He also reiterated his call for a complete oil embargo against Libya and welcomed plans by the European Union to widen sanctions.Merkel herself also called for an oil embargo in Brussels on Thursday. Both she and Westerwelle have insisted they wholeheartedly support the aims of the intervention. It has been widely reported that NATO allies – France in particular – are deeply annoyed by Germany’s refusal to participate in enforcing the no-fly zone and bombing Libyan military targets, as well as its abstention in the vote to approve the measures in the Security Council.

Germany: US troops ordered not to wear uniforms

US troops in Germany have been banned from wearing their military uniforms in public in the wake of the Frankfurt Airport shooting that left two American airmen dead and two seriously injured. US military newspaper Stars and Stripes reported on Thursday that troops in Europe had been ordered “to the maximum extent possible” to refrain from wearing their uniforms off-base, even during daily commutes, in a bid to make them less conspicuous to would-be attackers.“The directive specifically forbids the wear of uniforms for travel between duty and domicile, short convenience stops, conduct of physical fitness, travel between installations, and off-post messing,” the US European Command (EUCOM) has told personnel, according to the paper. The announcement comes three weeks after two US airmen were killed and two other men seriously wounded in a shooting attack on an American military bus at Frankfurt airport. A 21-year-old Muslim man of Kosovar background, Arid Uka, was arrested for the attack. It also comes as the US takes part in air attacks on Libyan targets in an effort to stop dictator Muammar Qaddafi bombing rebels and civilians. That operation is being run by US Africa Command headquarters in Stuttgart. The order reflects the concern that military commanders hold about potential terrorist attacks on troops, many of whom wear their uniforms while grabbing lunch at local restaurants and running errands.“You are not supposed to wear your uniform even if you are in your own car,” EUCOM spokesman Captain Ed Buclatin told the paper. However, some questions have been raised as the effectiveness of the order, given military personnel are easy to spot whether or not they are in uniform.“I don’t think it makes a lot of difference when I am driving my Xterra (SUV) through town,” Lt. Cmdr. Geoff Maasberg told Stars and Stripes. “People know who all the Americans are from our haircuts and that kind of stuff, but I don’t think there is a better way to do it. I think the higher-ups are doing what they need to do, and what they think is right to help us not get shot by some crazy guy with a gun.”Gunnery Sgt. Dennis Dougherty told the paper that having to change clothes back and forth “may be extreme,” but the directive nevertheless made sense.“I have always thought, ‘What is stopping somebody from attacking (US service personnel) or pulling over a little bit and running them over?’ ”

U.S. deaths in Germany point to lax security

By Benjamin Weinthal
BERLIN — The killing of two U.S. airmen — and the severe wounding of two other servicemen — at the Frankfurt airport have cast doubt on German authorities’ ability to protect thousands of American military personnel in the country, and brought back unpleasant memories from the long history of terror attacks against Americans on German soil. The attacker, 21-year-old Arid Uka, who was born in Kosovo and raised in Germany, confessed to authorities that he sought to target Americans because of the war in Afghanistan; his victims, U.S. airmen Zachary R. Cuddeback, 21, of Stanardsville, and Nicholas J. Alden, 25, of Williamston, S.C., were on their way there. The attack has Washington worried that local authorities will be unable to prevent future attacks on American servicemen in Germany, where the U.S. armed forces maintains a presence of roughly 50,000. German officials, including newly appointed Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich, were quick to play down the attack, and noted that they have no reason to raise security levels in the country. Here’s one: How did the Frankfurt Airport come to hire Uka as a postal employee while he was waxing lyrical about jihadism on his Facebook page?
In the 48 hours after the shootings, German federal prosecutor Rainer Griesbaum claimed Uka was an isolated criminal, with no connections to organized terror networks. Yet Uka showed no qualms about displaying his ties to a number of hardcore German Islamists on his Facebook feed. How could German security officials arrive at the definitive conclusion that Uka was a lone wolf in only 48 hours?
On March 3, police union official Bernhard Witthaut complained that Germany’s police departments employ too few Arabic speakers to monitor terror websites. Though homegrown radical Islamism has emerged as Germany’s greatest domestic security threat, Chancellor Angela Merkel’s administration has little appetite to confront it.
For starters, Merkel could ban Hezbollah on German soil. Germany could hire more Arabic and Farsi speakers to monitor jihadist websites. And it could retain more German Muslims to help infiltrate terrorist groups.
President Barack Obama’s meek public response to the shootings — a “tragic event” — showed surprisingly little concern for his troops, and no recognition of the immediacy of the issue.
Yet the shootings of U.S. soldiers is an almost inevitable outcome of the failure to heed warnings about the rise of political Islam in Germany. In October 2010, German security officials claimed that the Obama administration had issued false warnings of Islamist terror attacks in the country as a means of scoring points in the U.S. congressional elections the following month.German officials have a history of laxity toward violence against U.S. interests on their soil. The most notorious example, of course, is the Hamburg-based al-Qaida cell that launched the attacks of Sept. 11. The Al-Quds Mosque in that city served as the organizational hub for those attacks, and though referred to it as a destination for “jihadi tourism,” it took nine years for German authorities to shut it down.
Sadly, attacks on American military personnel in Germany are an established trend. In 1972, the German terrorist Red Army Faction killed U.S. Army officer Paul Bloomquist in a bombing in Frankfurt.
In 1981, the leftist RAF almost succeeded in killing the top U.S. Army general in Europe, Gen. Frederick Kroesen, and his wife, Rowena. As Gen. Kroesen was en route to deliver a lecture in an armor-plated car, RAF fanatics fired a bazooka at him. Kroesen and his wife were both injured in a flurry of flying glass, but luckily, they both survived.
In 1985, the RAF killed U.S. soldier Edward Pimental, stole his identification card to gain entry to the Rhein-Main Air Base, and used explosives to kill two people.
And let’s not forget the next year, when Libyan Col. Muammar Gadhafi ordered the bombing of the La Belle discotheque in Berlin, an attack that killed two U.S. servicemen and wounded 50 more. In spite of good reason to suspect that maniacs are still targeting American servicemen on their soil, German authorities have consistently done too little, too late to protect them.
Is that too much for Merkel to do, or too much for Obama to ask for?

German warships won't enforce Libyan embargo

German warships will not participate in a NATO operation in the Mediterranean to enforce a UN-mandated arms embargo on Libya. But Berlin said Wednesday it will increase its Afghanistan deployment to free up NATO forces. NATO has decided to impose an arms embargo on Libya, which could have concrete results and lead to an eventual recourse to arms. Germany will not take part in this," a Defence Ministry spokesman said late Tuesday."The ministry has decided to place two frigates and two ships in the Mediterranean under national command," he added. The two frigates, Lübeck and Hamburg, are part of NATO's Active Endeavour operation to stem terrorist activities in the region. The spokesman said: "For the time being, these vessels will remain in the Mediterranean and we have not decided where they will go."There are about 550 defence personnel aboard the four ships.NATO agreed Tuesday to use naval and air power to enforce an arms embargo on Libya. The NATO forces will monitor, report and, if needed, "interdict vessels suspected of carrying illegal arms or mercenaries," said NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen."All allies are committed to meet their responsibilities under the United Nations resolution to stop the intolerable violence against Libyan civilians," Rasmussen said.He said NATO had completed plans to help enforce the no-fly zone "to bring our contribution, if needed, in a clearly defined manner, to the broad international effort to protect the people of Libya from the violence of the Qaddafi regime."Germany, a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, abstained in a vote on Thursday to permit "all necessary measures" to establish a no-fly zone, protect civilian areas and impose a ceasefire on Muammar Qaddafi's military. But Chancellor Angela Merkel's cabinet decided Wednesday that Germany will send up to 300 crew members to operate surveillance planes in Afghanistan in a bid to free up NATO resources enforcing the no-fly zone in Libya."The federal government will make available up to 300 army troops for the AWACS surveillance flights over Afghanistan within the framework of NATO's ISAF mission," the defence ministry said in a statement.Germany is the third-largest provider of troops to the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in a mission that polls show is deeply unpopular at home.Speaking before the cabinet meeting, Defence Minister Thomas de Maiziere said: "This is a real easing of the burden on NATO. It is a political sign of our solidarity with the alliance, especially given the events in Libya."NATO agreed to deploy the Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) planes, which are fitted with long-range radar allowing them to detect other aircraft and prevent mid-air collisions, to Afghanistan in January. The cabinet's decision has to be approved in parliament, probably on Friday.

Schäuble says Islam is part of Germany

Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble on Tuesday warned Germany must not discriminate against its Muslim population, saying that Islam was a part of its society. His comments contrast starkly with those of the country's new conservative interior minister.
“We have every interest in saying that Islam is a part of our country and in inviting Muslims to value what we have achieved in the Western World,” the Christian Democrat told the latest edition of political magazine Cicero.

Germany: Muslims forming charity system for kindergartens and care homes

Muslims in Germany want to form their own charity to support retirement homes and kindergartens nationwide, leader of the Central Council of Muslims (ZMD) said Friday.Such a system is desperately needed by Muslims and would have the same rights and duties as Christian charities, Aiman Mazyek told daily Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung.

Germany: New laws against forced marriages, marriages of convenience

The German parliament approved a law on Thursday which calls for up to five years in prison for anyone forcing a girl or woman into marriage. The new law would also give non-German citizens who are forced by their husbands or families to leave the country after their marriage a legal right to return to Germany. The parliament in Berlin also addressed several other issues related to the integration of foreigners in the society. In a move to prevent marriages of convenience, foreigners wedded to German citizens will now have to be married three years before a divorce in order to get their own independent residence permit. Prior law required them to be married two years.

Israel Seizes German-Owned Vessel, Aiming to Arm its Enemies

Yesterday, Israel seized another German-owned vessel containing Iranian weapons on its way to the terrorist group Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Commenting on the cargo of the German-owned ship Victoria, Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, “we discovered many weapons destined for terror groups in the heart of Gaza. The source of the weapons was Iran which is trying to arm the Strip.”
The Jerusalem Post reports that, “The Victoria cargo ship that was boarded by Israeli Navy commandos on Tuesday morning was carrying advanced Chinese-made anti-ship missiles that would have threatened Israeli sea-based strategic installations and navy vessels.”
This is not the first time Germany has been lax on enforcing sanctions against Iran's merchants of death. In October 2009, the Hansa India—sailing under a German flag and owned by the Hamburg-based Leonhardt & Blumberg Company—was stopped in the Red Sea by the U.S. Navy for unlawfully transporting ammunition to Syria and Hezbollah. The next month, the Francop, a German-owned vessel, was seized by Israel’s navy because it was carrying weapons destined for Syria and Hezbollah. German naval carriers were supposedly enforcing the 2006 U.N.-brokered cease-fire between Hezbollah and Israel after the second war in Lebanon. But while German chancellor Angela Merkel’s administration pledged to deploy its navy as part of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon to prevent the rearming of Hezbollah along the Lebanese coast, Hezbollah has ably stockpiled between 40,000 and 50,000 new rockets on Israel's northern border since the war ended. The Islamic Republic of Iran enjoys wide latitude in using German vessels to arm Israel's enemies. This, by itself, should prompt national security bells to ring in Jerusalem and Washington. But how does one reconcile Merkel's refusal to bar the rental of German freight ships to Iranian weapons’ smugglers—and her own failure to shut down Iran's main financial terror conduit on the continent, the Hamburg-based European-Iranian Trade Bank —with her previously stated goal of advancing Western and Israeli security? Indeed, all this makes one wonder about the meaning of Merkel's often-repeated security guarantees for the Jewish state. She reflexively tells Israeli and American politicians, “Israel's security will never be open to negotiation.”
But one must ask, if Merkel genuinely believes that Israel's security is non-negotiable, then why won't she stop dithering on Iran? While she procrastinates, Iran continues its drive to go nuclear.

Acquaintance of Frankfurt Shooter Charged as Al-Qaeda Member

Arid Uka’s connection to Rami Makanesi casts doubt on German authorities’ insistence that the Frankfurt shooter acted as a “lone wolf."
by John Rosenthal
The German Federal Prosecutor’s Office has brought charges against 25-year-old Rami Makanesi: a German national suspected of having been chosen by al-Qaeda to develop a European support network for the terror organization. Makanesi — who continues to be identified by German authorities simply as “Rami M.” — has been in German custody since August 2010. He is known to have lived in the same apartment building in Frankfurt as the Frankfurt Airport shooter Arid Uka, and the two men are reported to have been friends.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, Makanesi travelled from Germany to Pakistan via Iran in March 2009, in order to receive military training at a camp run by the so-called Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. He is supposed subsequently to have joined an al-Qaeda camp in May 2009, receiving training there before “taking part in violent jihad.” The latter phrase is presumably an allusion to combat against coalition troops in Afghanistan.

German Jewish leader calls boycotts anti-semitic

"The initiators think they’re being especially clever by saying themselves that it has nothing to do with the Nazis’ slogan ‘Don’t Buy from Jews.’"
BERLIN – Dieter Graumann, the new head of Germany’s Central Council of Jews, on Tuesday issued a blistering attack on German peace activists who are promoting a boycott of Israeli fruit and cosmetic products.“To me, the calls for a boycott – as I have said before in the matter in North Rhine- Westphalia – naturally are anti-Semitic in character,” Graumann told The Jerusalem Post. What else would they be?” Graumann added that “This time, the initiators think they’re being especially clever by saying themselves that it has nothing to do with the Nazis’ slogan ‘Don’t Buy from Jews.’ But that doesn’t help. It is what it is. Calls for boycotts against Israel – especially in Germany – for me always have an insensitive character.”
“And by the way,” Graumann continued. “Where are all these peace groups’ calls for boycotts of Iran, for example? That alone speaks volumes. And the fact that some Jews – whom I think are misguided – are taking part, is no justification.”Activists from the “Bremer Peace Forum,” located in the northern port city of Bremen, called in early March for Israeli products to be boycotted because of Israel’s construction and policies in the disputed West Bank territories.According to a Bremer Peace Forum boycott call, the Germans are “joining the worldwide appeal of concerned Jews.” Meanwhile, the forum listed no Jewish supporters, and compared Israel with the former racist regime in South Africa. When asked about Graumann stating the forum’s boycott action is infected with anti-Semitism, Hartmut Drewes, a spokesman for the Forum, told the Post on Tuesday that “our people are not anti-Semites.” He added “we commemorate the Kristallnacht pogrom” and “we are not against Jews.”Asked if the forum is boycotting any other countries, he said no.The German Left Party branch in Bremen showed photographs of the demonstrators on its website standing in front of a Rewe City supermarket, with posters stating “Boycott Israel’s fruits.”Asked about the Left Party showcasing the boycott calls against Israel on its website, Andreas Hein, a spokesman for the Bremen Left Party, responded by e-mail that the Left Party “neither supports nor called for” a boycott of Israeli fruit.

IDF seizes German freighter of Iranian weapons headed to Gaza

The IDF seized a freighter ship with dozens of tons of weaponry from Iran headed for Hamas in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday. The ship, known as Victoria, was flying a Liberian flag, and was seized by the navy in the Mediterranean Sea, 200 miles off of Israel's coast. The Victoria was boarded by commandos from the Israeli Navy's Flotilla 13, also known as the Shayetet, arrived in the Ashdod port on Tuesday evening. An initial inspection of the cargo revealed the ship was carrying weapons. The exact amount is to be determined. The crew, questioned by the Navy Commando, was not aware that the cargo contained weaponry. The ship set sail Monday night from the port of Lattakai in Syria and from there it traveled to Turkey. There, it was supposed to unload the weapons, which would travel by land to Gaza. The IDF's assessment is that the weapons did not originate in Turkey, but that the containers were unloaded there and transferred onto the Victoria. The port of Lattakai is the same port where two Iranian war ships docked in February on their way to the Suez Canal. At the time, IDF officials raised concerns of the possibility that they were carrying weapons intended for terrorists organizations, but there was no confirmation."The operation was approved as necessary in accordance with government directives in light of Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Benny Gantz's recommendations," an IDF statement read. Gantz updated Defense Minister Ehud Barak about the findings on-board the vessel earlier in the morning."The IDF and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs alerted German authorities about the interception of the "Victoria" due to the German ownership of the ship," the statement said.

For the record …

Muslim chief demands Germany tackles ‘Islamophobia’, or else…..

by sheikyermami
Nobody does victimhood better, while Mazek demands Germany’s submission….
Germany’s main Muslim organization announced Saturday it is to boycott planned talks with the government over its refusal to address the key concerns of Muslims, including the problem of Islamophobia, the daily Neuen Osnabruecker Zeitung reported.
The Chairman of the Central Council of Muslims Aiman Mazyek said the government-sponsored Islam Conference, scheduled to be held in Berlin on March 29, had to encompass a greater part of Germany’s Muslim civic society.
He also urged the conference to press ahead with the formation of two working groups which would dwell on aspects like granting official recognition to Islam as a religious community in Germany and serious tackling Islamophobia. (…)
(In other words: shut down any criticism of Islam with so-called hate speech laws and give Islam a status above all other religions, last step implement sharia for all…..)

Austria: German-language courses are a provocation for Turkey

Representatives of the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) visited Ankara recently in order to see how to improve the integration of Turkish Austrians. They were told by Mehmet Özavsar, head of the Turkish Religious Affairs authority (Diyanet) that second and third generation Turks in Austria did not have serious integration problems, since the young Turks in Austria have already breathed in deeply of the European air. If there were problems with integration, he said, the Austrian politicians should come up with projects to fix the situation. But he did not go into concrete details.Gürsel Dönmez, a political scientist who had lived in Vienna for 22 years, said that courses in German were perceived as a provocation in Ankara. "A Turk will always feel like a Turk, we just have a very strong national awareness."Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan tasked Dönmez with creating a new agency to care for Turks abroad. Erdogan recently told German Turks to learn Turkish before they learn German. Does that mean they should remain Turks? Dönmez: No, of course we can't say that. But, he adds, assimilation is a violation of human rights, as Erdogan says.

German Authorities Confirm that Frankfurt Shooter Viewed De Palma Clip

The combination of fictional American “atrocities” and radical Islamic preaching appears to have led Arid Uka to kill.
by John Rosenthal
According to the German wire service dapd, the German Attorney General’s Office has confirmed that the video clip viewed by the Frankfurt Airport shooter Arid Uka — and that allegedly provoked him to kill American soldiers — was indeed the rape scene from Brian De Palma’s fictional anti-Iraq War movie Redacted. Attorney General spokesperson Frank Wallenta confirmed the identity of the clip to the German television news magazine Spiegel TV.
Uka viewed the De Palma clip as part of a four-and-a-half minute propaganda video that was posted on a German-language YouTube page under the title “American Soldiers Rape our Sisters! Awake Oh Ummah.” The video was removed from YouTube shortly after the publication of a Pajamas Media report noting its existence and linking it. It can currently be viewed on The Daily Caller here.
In addition to the rape scene, the propaganda video contains three other scenes. One shows American soldiers breaking down the door of a family’s home and rushing into the home with guns raised; a second shows American soldiers touching Iraqi girls; and the third shows what appears to be an Arabic-language news report and attempts to revive a severely wounded pregnant woman who has been shot at an American checkpoint. The “reporter” is shown interviewing the woman’s fraught brother as attempts are made to save her life. The “reporter” then announces that the woman has died.
All four of the scenes are in fact fictional scenes taken from Brian De Palma’s film Redacted. Two shots of Arabic text, as well as some music and Arabic voice-over, have been added to the De Palma footage.

RAMSTEIN – (EJPost) Comrades of a U.S. airman killed last Week by an islamist shooter in Germany gathered Thursday to pay their respects.
Dozens of people gathered at the Ramstein Air Base in western Germany to honor 21-year-old Zachary Cuddleback, one of two servicemen shot and killed on March 2 during an attack at Germany’s Frankfurt International Airport.
Cuddleback was driving a bus bringing Britain-based airmen to the Ramstein base for deployment to Afghanistan when the gunman opened fire. Two other airmen were also wounded in the attack.
Twenty-one-year-old German native Arid Uka has been charged in the shooting.
A funeral service for Cuddleback will be held later in the United States.

Germany: Egyptian imam stripped of asylum rights over hate speech

An Egyptian-born imam lost a court fight Wednesday to stave off his expulsion from Germany after he was accused of preaching hatred towards Christians and Jews. The superior administrative tribunal in Muenster, northern Germany, agreed to a federal government demand to strip his political asylum. A lower tribunal must now review whether to order his actual deportation to Egypt. His lawyer said he would appeal, adding, "This may take years."

Germany Convicts Woman of Supporting Terrorism

BERLIN. A Berlin court has sentenced the wife of a German terrorist leader to two years and six months in jail, on charges of supporting a foreign terrorist group. However, the Court annulled the arrest warrant against the 29 year old. Until the verdict is passed, she remains in liberty. Her lawyer wants to appeal against the conviction.
The 29-year-old woman (Photo), was found guilty Wednesday of raising funds for the Islamic Jihad Union and the German Taliban Mujahideen.
The woman, identified by the Associated Press as Filiz Gelowicz, is the wife of Fritz Gelowicz. He was convicted in March 2010 of plotting attacks against American soldiers in Germany.

Islam "Does Not Belong" to Germany

by Soeren Kern
When Germany's new Interior Minister, Hans-Peter Friedrich, says Islam is not a part of the German way of life and "does not belong" in Germany, his comments sparked a new round of debate over the increasingly contentious question of Muslim immigration, integration and assimilation, and the role of Islam in modern German society.
Considering that more than one million immigrants living permanently in Germany cannot speak German, the government is now pushing for the children of non-German-speaking parents to develop better German language skills.
But that idea hit resistance from none other than Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who on February 27 travelled to Germany to urge Turkish parents living in Germany to teach their children to learn to read and write Turkish before German.
Speaking to a crowd of more than 10,000 immigrants waving Turkish flags and shouting "Turkey is Great!" in the German industrial city of Düsseldorf, Erdogan said. "We are against assimilation. No one should be able to rip us away from our culture and civilization. Our children must learn German, but first they must learn Turkish."

Germany's Jihad Murders Point Up the West's Denial

by Robert Spencer
A Kosovar Albanian Muslim, Arid Uka, murdered two American airmen outside the Frankfurt Airport in Germany last Wednesday. “I did it for Allah,” he explained. Like so many jihad attacks these days, this one was initially dismissed as having nothing to do with terrorism. Boris Rhein, interior minister for Germany’s Hesse state, almost immediately declared that there were no indications that the shootings had been a terror attack. After Uka’s openly jihadist statements, Rhein had to reverse himself. But his initial reaction was indicative of the general tendency toward denial of the reality of the Islamic jihad among government and law enforcement personnel in the West. What actually would constitute a terrorist attack for enlightened liberal Westerners such as Rhein? Would the murderer have to announce that he was about to carry out a terrorist attack before he started shooting? Would he have to be carrying an al-Qaeda membership card? In the case of the Frankfurt Airport shooting, Uka appears to have acted alone. Thus German security analyst Bernd Georg Thamm noted: “We have a new ... perpetrator of terrorism, the lone wolf. Terrorism experts have dreaded this for a while, and now it’s happened. And it won’t be the last case.”

Why Are We Still In Germany?

According to Bismarck's best-known maxim on Europe's most troublesome region, the Balkans are not worth the bones of a single Pomeranian grenadier. Americans could be forgiven for harboring similar sentiments after the murder of two U.S. airmen in Germany by a Kosovar Muslim.
Remember Kosovo? Me neither. But it was big at the time, launched by Bill Clinton in the wake of his Monica difficulties: Make war, not love, as the boomers advise. So Clinton did — and without any pesky U.N. resolutions, or even the pretense of seeking them.
Instead, he and Tony Blair and even Jacques Chirac just cried "Bombs away!" and got on with it. And the left didn't mind at all — because, for a modern western nation, war is only legitimate if you have no conceivable national interest in whatever war you're waging.
Unlike Iraq and all its supposed "blood for oil," in Kosovo no one remembers why we went in, what the hell the point of it was, or which side were the good guys. (Answer: Neither.) The principal rationale advanced by Clinton and Blair was that there was no rationale. This was what they called "liberal interventionism", which boils down to: The fact that we have no reason to get into it justifies our getting into it.
A decade on, Kosovo is a sorta sovereign state, and in Frankfurt a young airport employee is so grateful for what America did for his people that he guns down U.S. servicemen while yelling "Allahu akbar!"
The strange shrunken spectator who serves as President of the United States, offering what he called "a few words about the tragic event that took place," announced that he was "saddened," and expressed his "gratitude for the service of those who were lost" and would "spare no effort" to "work with the German authorities" but it was a "stark reminder" of the "extraordinary sacrifices that our men and women in uniform are making . . ."
The passivity of these remarks is very telling. Men and women "in uniform" (which it's not clear these airmen were even wearing) understand they may be called upon to make "extraordinary sacrifices" in battle. They do not expect to be "lost" on the shuttle bus at the hands of a civilian employee at a passenger air terminal in an allied nation.
But then I don't suppose their comrades expected to be "lost" at the hands of an army major at Fort Hood, to cite the last "tragic event" that "took place" — which seems to be the president's preferred euphemism for a guy opening fire while screaming "Allahu akbar!"

Kosovo center for “white” al-Qaeda, experts

Serbian terrorism expert, Darko Trifunovc, says that the Kosovo Albanian who killed 2 US soldiers in Germany is part of the “white” al-Qaeda being recruited in the Balkans with its center being in Kosovo.
The Albanian terrorist, Arif Uka (Photo), hails from the town of Kosovska Mitrovica which also happens to be the recruitment center for “white” al-Qaeda that is managed by former Kosovo Albanian KLA gunmen and financed by the Saudis. says another expert, Zoran Dragisic.
Uka’s grandfather was a Muslim Imam in the village of Zabar.
“White” al-Qaeda is a reference to a Muslim terrorist like the Albanian Uka who has European racial features and can easily blend in the Western society as a sleeper terrorist cell.
Dragisic says that a Kosovo Albanian, Ekhrem Avdiya, is a leader of the “Kosovo Islamic Bureau” in Kosovska Mitrovica and that the Bureau is formed in 1998 and financed by Saudis.
Its purpose is to funnel terror money and recruit local Albanian Muslims for terror attacks.
“Most of these are from the ranks of the KLA. At the end of the 1990s, in Kosovska Mitrovica, a group of al-Qaeda members were persecuted among whom was Ekhrem Avdiyu, Hadzmadin Laush and Shpen Kopriva,” says Dragisic.
In 2001, these men were released from jail due to the US pressure says Dragisic and Avdiyu went back to running the Islamic Bureau.
Avdiyu is known by its terror name of Abu Sheib.
Trifunovic says that the al-Qaeda’s Kosovo wing is called Abu Bekir Sadik.
Avdiyu has a degree from the university of Media, Saudi Arabia and is a graduate of the terror camp Host in Afghanistan.
Avdiyu also took terror training in Jablanica near Tesanj in Bosnia.
Incidentally, Bosnia’s Tesanj is politically controlled by the Bosnian Muslim family Ljevakovic and one of the Ljevakovic’s, Enes, writes for a magazine edited by Canada’s Bosnian Muslim leader Emir Ramic who is accusing Trifkovic of genocide denial.
Trifunovic says that Abu Bekir Sadik was formed in 1998 with help of Abdulah Dunaman who ran the humanitarian organization Bureau for Islamic Calling. This group was Saudi financed and worked out of Bosnia.
Today, Abu Bekir Sadik is in the Albanian-dominated part of Kosovska Mitrovica in the borough of Tamnik. Members meet in the local cafe Besa and hotel Palas at the entrance of the city.
“Abu Bekir Sadik is made up of 30 terrorists among whom are Shpend Kopriva, Muhamed Avdiya, Sami Hoti, Alia Hoti, Besim Ismaili, Ertan Bitiqi, Ahmed Hoxa, Lulyzam Imeri, Nedzmedin Laush and Arif Krasniqi,” says Trifunovic.
Abu Bekir Sadik closely cooperates with another Kosovo Albanian Islamic terror group led by Rahman Rama.

German Iran-link bank under fire

A protester dresses as Ahmadinejad outside EIH bank
By Toby Axelrod
Protesters in Germany demanded this week the closure of an Iran-owned bank which they claim helps finance the regime's nuclear programme.
The demonstration, which was made up of Jewish, Christian, exile-Iranian and other groups, was organised by Stop the Bomb, a German NGO.
It follows heightened pressure by the US government on Germany to crack down on the European-Iranian Trade Bank.
"Iran is a great danger for Israel and the rest of the world," said Wolfgang Seibert, head of the Jewish community of Pinneberg, who was at the protest. "And if the German government supports this bank, it is a stain on Germany's reputation."
According to Fox News, the US treasury already has put the bank on its no-go list. Eleven US Senators wrote to German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle earlier this month urging him to take action to close down the bank because of its "financial support of Iran's nuclear proliferation activities".
Meanwhile, Mr Westerwelle's meeting with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinedjad in Tehran last week coincided with the release of two German journalists from an Iranian prison.
The pair had been held in custody for 133 days for trying to interview the son of a woman convicted to death by stoning for alleged adultery.
The woman's attorney now faces a death sentence, said Michael Spaney, spokesperson for Stop the Bomb.
He said it seemed the German government only cared about German citizens in Iran but not about the Iranian people themselves.

Targeted attack against the U.S. Army, or hatred of Germany and the Jews?

German authorities said Thursday that Arid Uker (photo), arrested over the fatal shooting of two US airmen was an Islamic extremist, but played down fears that he was part of a terrorist cell.
In what appears to have been the first Islamist “terror” attack on German soil, he also injured two other US airmen seriously injured. One of them was reportedly shot in the head and was fighting for his life on Thursday in a Frankfurt hospital. The other was also in intensive care.
Investigators were studying a page on social networking website Facebook believed to be the suspect’s, on which he named himself Abu Reyyan and made no secret of his extremist tendencies.
On the page he was a “fan” of several Islamic websites, had a link to a jihadi war song and had commented “this stupid kuffar (‘unbeliever’)” on a posting, Der Spiegel said. The page was no longer available on Thursday.
Der Spiegel said on its website that he had tried several times to travel to Afghanistan but that after being prevented from doing so had decided to attack US soldiers in Germany.
Arid Uka (21), is NOT from Kosovo, he was born in Germany and grow up in Frankfurt-Sossenheim and he is German. His parents came from Mitrovica in Kosovo and live since more than 40 years in Germany.
A police source in Pristina said that the suspect was an ethnic Albanian from the town of Mitrovica in the north of the disputed territory of Kosovo, and did not have a criminal record.
He had contacts to the Salafists-Scene in Germany (Radical Islamists) and there Leaders Pierre Vogel, Sven Lau, Abou Ibrahim Nagdie und Abdullatif. The latter is considered as an influential preachers in the Frankfurt area.
Arid U. wanted a bloodbath, killing people he considers unbelievers. People who wage war against Muslims and therefore must die in his view. Therefore, armed with a pistol and a considerable quantity of ammunition, he made on the way Wednesday morning to the Frankfurt/Main airport, where he worked.
In the afternoon, U. waited outside the terminal 2 on his victims – American soldiers. A dozen military police from the U.S. Air Force, stationed in the British Lakenheath, arrived in a plane from London.
Even before the group was at the airport terminal to the waiting bus, Arid U. got into the vehicle. As an airport employee, apparently he could easily obtain access to the Bus. He opened fire with a pistol, at least one American hit in the head, another in the upper body. The driver of the bus was taken seriously injured, slumped in his seat together.
The U.S. soldiers who were unarmed and surprised at the time of the attack, tried in panic to flee the bus. Only the fact that the weapon jammed suddenly, could avoid further victims. The gunman let the gun fall and fled back into the airport terminal, where he was later overpowered by officials of the German Federal Police.
Arid U. rejected the country in which he lived and his hate grew up in the last few years more and more. Germany, under the leadership of the “infidels Merkel”, that stands with solidarity to Israel on the side of the Jews,”is like a declaration of war” to all muslims, he said.
And, Arid U. wanted to go to war. On his computer at home, the Islamist was preparing himself for the jihad against the hated infidels.
Uker cried “Allahu Akhbar” (“God is Great”), witnesses told reporters, before opening fire in the bus at one of Europe’s busiest airports.
“In view of the circumstances, there is a suspicion that this was an act with Islamist motivation,” said Germanys federal prosecutors one Day after the Wednesday’s shooting. But at the same time, they are hurry to played down any fears that this was a Terrorist attack.
They “see no wider terrorist plot in the attack”, the German Police said.

Frankfurt Shooter Admits To Shouting ‘Allah Akbar’

Arid Uka’s Facebook friends list was a “Who’s Who of the German Islamist Scene."
by John Rosenthal
According to the German public television broadcaster NDR, Arid Uka, the 21-year-old who shot to death two American servicemen at Frankfurt Airport on Wednesday and wounded two others, has admitted to shouting “‘Allah Akbar’ six or seven times” during the attack. An NDR press release cites Uka’s own statements to German investigators as contained in a German police report.
During questioning following his arrest, Uka is reported, furthermore, to have told police that he saw “terrible pictures” involving American soldiers in a video on the internet. The NDR press release continues:

Germany: Interior Minister Friedrich reignites Islam debate

Germany’s new Interior Minister Hans-Peter Friedrich reignited a bitter debate over Islam this week after he said the religion did not “belong” in the country, prompting a call on Friday for him to give up charge of the government's Islam conference.
During his first public appearance as interior minister on Thursday, Friedrich responded to questions by reporters about the shooting of two US airmen in Frankfurt by an alleged Islamist with an inflammatory statement. He said Muslims living in Germany were part of society, “but that Islam belongs in Germany is something that has no historical foundation.”

Frankfurt Airport murderer a "devout Muslim" who worked at the airport

Because not to have hired him would have been "Islamophobic." But was any effort made, however imperfect such an effort would inevitably have been, to determine his sentiments toward the jihad and the kuffar? Any effort at all? Of course not. That, too, would have been "Islamophobic."

Jihad in Frankfurt, ‘allahu akbar’

by sheikyermami
“Motive unclear”
Now watch the ‘authorities’ and learned analysts scratch their heads over this one. What actually would constitute a terrorist attack? Would the murderer have to announce that he was about to carry out a terrorist attack before he started shooting? Would he have to be carrying an al-Qaeda membership card?

Two American Soldiers shot dead at Frankfurt Airport Germany

LONDON (AP) – The U.S. Air Force in Britain says the two airmen killed and two others wounded in the Frankfurt airport shooting were based in the U.K.
A spokesman for Air Force at Lakenheath airfield confirmed all four were from the military base in eastern England.
Lakenheath is home to the 48th Fighter Wing, the United States’ only F-15 fighter wing. Its website says the base employs some 4,500 active-duty military members, as well as 2,000 British and U.S. civilians.
BERLIN – (EJPost) Kosovo Interior Minister Bajram Rexhepi identified the suspect as Arif Uka, a Kosovo citizen from the northern town of Mitrovica. This could be Arif Uka´s Facebook site:
In Berlin, German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed sympathy for the victims and their families and pledged that Germany would do everything in its power to investigate the crime. ”It is a terrible event,” she said.
U.S. Air Force Europe spokeswoman Maj. Beverly Mock said all four victims were airmen. The were all based at the Lakenheath military base in Britain.
A military official in Europe says the airmen were going to be deployed to either Iraq or Afghanistan.
President Obama said he was “saddened and outraged” by the shooting.
The president says the U.S. will spare no effort in finding out how the “outrageous” act took place and will ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice. He called it a tragedy

Mina Ahadi: Do only lives of German citizens count for Westerwelle?

German Foreign Minister Westerwelle ignores the imminent execution of the Iranian lawyer of Sakineh Ashtiani and lets the Iranian regime bank EIH continue to operate in Hamburg
The hanging of Houtan Kian, the lawyer of Sakineh Ashtiani, is imminent, according to information from the International Committee against Stoning and Execution. Ashtiani is an Iranian woman threatened to be stoned. Kian was arrested together with the two German journalists Jens Koch und Markus Hellwig on October 10, 2010, in his office in Tabriz. The journalists have been released on February 19, 2011, during an Iran journey by the German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle, where Westerwelle met with Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and the Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.
Mina Ahadi, spokesperson of the International Committee against Stoning and Execution, talked about Kian on a rally in Hamburg last sunday: “Do only lives of German citizens count for Westerwelle? Instead of promoting political and economic ties with the regime at the expense of human rights, the German government should speak out on Iran as clearly as on Libya, and ostracize and isolate the dictatorship in Iran.”
Mina Ahadi spoke at a protest rally against the Iranian EIH bank in Hamburg. The EIH bank is one of the most important loopholes in the international Iran sanctions. It can continue to operate despite being involved in deals for the Iranian nuclear weapons program and massive international protests.
“The announced execution of the human rights lawyer Houtan Kian shortly after Westerwelle’s trip to Iran demonstrates how useless human rights appeals to the rulers in Tehran are. To the contrary, the announcement by the German Foreign Minister in Tehran to expand the German-Iranian relations and cooperations only emboldened the regime to continue the current wave of executions”, said Jonathan Weckerle, spokesperson of the campaign STOP THE BOMB, who organized the rally.
A broad coalition of exile-Iranian, Jewish, Christian and secular political organizations demanded together with STOP THE BOMB the immediate closure of the Iranian regime bank in Hamburg, and called for a “stop of the German soft line approach towards the Iranian regime”. It was time to isolate the Iranian torture regime politically and economically and to massively support the Iranian freedom movement.
But Germany undauntedly continues its policy of dialogue with the unscrupulous Islamist rulers in Iran.
Directly following the Iran trip of Westerwelle, Kazem Jalali traveled to Germany last week. Jalali is the Spokesman for the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of Iran’s Parliament. In Germany he met with Barbara Lochbihler from the Green Party, who is chairwoman of the Iran delegation of the European Parliament. Westerwelle and Lochbihler in their meetings with the representatives of the Iranian regime talked about further dialogue meetings, cooperation in many sectors and even the extension of the economic ties.

Turkish PM Erdogan, in Germany, urges Turks not to assimilate

What is striking about this is that whenever there is jihadist unrest in European countries, the mainstream media starts wringing its hands about how the British or French or Germans have not done enough to assimilate Muslim immigrants. That those immigrants are called upon not to assimilate always escapes their notice.
