Because of Erdogan scandal: Catcalls for Gündogan and Özil at the international football match against Austria

It was a difficult evening for the German national players of Turkish origin Mesut Özil and Ilkay Gündogan: they were already booed at the national anthem. Gündogan in particular was booed at every ball action. Özil, the German goal scorer at 1:2, also had to endure booing. Gündogan received a catcalls during his replacement in the 56th minute. The catcalls obviously hurt him: Gündogan made many mistakes and played weakly. Özil, who was replaced in the 76th minute, also heard booing as he left the field. Reason for the displeasure of the German and Austrian fans in the stadium: The scandal around a meeting of the two players with the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a few weeks ago. Both players donated one of their jerseys to Erdogan, supporting the despot, who had tens of thousands of critics arrested in his country, in an election campaign for the early parliamentary and presidential elections to be held on 24 June. Gündogan went one better: "For my president", the German international wrote to Erdogan as a dedication to the jersey gift.
